Women’s Soccer: Saints shutout Yellowjackets
October 19, 2007
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s posted two goals in the
first half and held on defeating Montana State Billings 2-0 in soaked
Great Northwest Athletic Conference match Friday afternoon at the
Regional Athletic Complex.
“I thought our kids deserved the win, their effort
was great, their attitudes were great the whole game. It’s very
difficult to play in the driving rain but they made the best of it. I’m
very pleased and proud of all of them,” said head coach Rob Walker.
The Saints picked up their first goal at the 34:48
mark when Ashley Biral scored when in the wet conditions the MSUB keeper
slipped coming out of the goal leaving Biral an easy target. Julianna
Sackeyfio was credited with the assist on the play.
Saint Martin’s would get another goal ten minutes
later in the 44th minute as Kayci Donatelli scored off a deflection.
The Yellowjackets outshot the Saints 18-10 but ended
up on the wrong end of things unable to connect on any of them. Breanna
Klasen spent the entire game in goal for the Saints and had eight saves.
“It was definitely a game of two halves with
different results. The first half our work rate and ability to take
chances on a very wet and soggy field was to our advantage. I thought we
played our best soccer in quite a while in one half. Leading 2-0 at the
break was a testament to that,” added Walker. “I think the conditions of
the day made it hard for MSUB to play but in the second half they
brought out more of their weapons and pushed us a bit. The breaks of the
game, which some days have gone against us, worked for us today as they
had three balls go off the crossbar.”
The Saints are at home again this Sunday as they
play the first game of a women’s and men’s doubleheader against Seattle
University at the RAC.
