Women’s Soccer: Saints earn first victory
September 1, 2007
Arcata, CA – Saint Martin’s women’s soccer earned
its first win in school history beating Notre Dame de Namur 2-1 in the
Humboldt State Lumberjack Classic Saturday.
SMU scored first as Ashley Biral picked up her first
goal of the season 30 minutes in the first half. The Argonauts would tie
the game four minutes later.
The score would remain tied until the Saints got the
game winning goal with just 50 seconds left in regulation. Trisha
Halvorson got the goal off the corner on an assist from Jessica Wilson.
“We played very well in the second half. We made
some adjustments at halftime to some things that were happening to us
technically and tactically and those adjustments paved the way to a good
second half for us,” said head coach Rob Walker. “It was a tight game
throughout. They had a ball off the post in the first half that could
have scored but it stayed 1-1 at half.”
NDNU edged out the Saints on shots, 13-9 but SMU
took six corner kicks to the Argos 2.
Breanna Klasen spent all 90 minutes in the goal for
Saint Martin’s and had four saves to get her first win.
“The kids did very well, they were very spirited. I
was really pleased to see them get their first victory as a program,”
added Walker.
The Saints have a break until September 8 when they
travel to Spokane to take on Whitworth University.
