Volleyball: Saints drop final two at tournament

Ellensburg, WA - Saint Martin’s finished the CWU
Invitational with a 1-2 record after falling to Sonoma State 3-0, 25-18,
25-12, 25-13, and Chaminade University 3-0, 25-10, 25-18, 25-23,
Saturday at Nicholson Pavilion.
In the first game against Sonoma, SMU fell behind
early 6-0. The found their way back tying it 15-15 but a 10-3 run by the
Seawolves would put the game away. SSU would use two five point runs to
take the easy win in the second game.
SMU was within two at 11-13, in what would be the
final match, but Sonoma scored 12 of the final 14 points in the game for
the win.
Brianna Bautista and Theresia Dever led the Saints
nine digs each while Andrea Tarbet had a team high seven kills. Sonoma
outhit SMU 36-23 in the match.
Saint Martin’s fell behind early in their second
match of the day as Chaminade opened a 16-3 lead in the first game,
quickly putting the game out of reach for the Saints.
The Saints battled back in game two, staying with
the Silverswords most of the way. Tied at 18 apiece Chaminade forced a
sideout then sent six straight serves over for points earning the
victory.
After SMU built up a six point lead in game three,
the Swords came back to first tie it then pull ahead at 15-13. Kills by
Tarbet and Malia Ibarra would even the score as the two teams battled
for the advantage. At 23-23 Chaminade got back-to-back kills from Trina
Kauliakamoa and Courtney Lorusso to take the match.
Tarbet had 15 kills for the Saints while Ibarra and
Dever had nine each. Bautista added 11 digs and Kanoe Kalalau put up 21
set assists.
The Saints will play their first home match of the
year Tuesday, September 9th against Hawaii Pacific.
