Volleyball: Saints defeat Sea Warriors
September
5, 2008
Ellensburg, WA – Malia Ibarra and Nicole Ostlund led
Saint Martin’s with 11 kills apiece as the Saints earned a 4-1 win over
Hawaii Pacific University, 25-20, 26-24, 15-25, 25-19, Friday at the
Central Washington University Invitational.
After taking game one, the Saints battled with the
Sea Warriors for the lead in game two. Tied 21-21, HPU went ahead on a
bad set and an attack error by Saint Martin’s. The Saints then took
advantage of the same mistakes from the Sea Warriors and a kill by
Ostlund to go up 24-23. Hawaii Pacific was able to even the score yet
again but back-to-back kills from Angela Smith and Ibarra put the game
away.
HPU controlled the entire third game and took the
early lead in the fourth but the Saints found their way back into it.
Down 17-19 SMU scored the final eight points of the game to take the
match.
Brianna Bautista led the Saints with 19 digs while
Ibarra had 18 and Theresia Dever added 16. Andrea Tarbet and Kristin
Anderson had seven kills each in the match. SMU outhit Hawaii Pacific
46-34.
“The girls really stepped up and rallied together
today,” said head coach Phil Ibarra. “This was a big win on the part of
the kids. Their team chemistry is really coming together.”
The Saints take on both Sonoma State and Chaminade
tomorrow, September 6th, at 10am and 5pm respectively.
