August
29, 2008
Hilo, HI – Saint Martin’s earned their first victory
of the season after battling with the University of Charleston (WV),
defeating the Golden Eagles in four games, 25-18, 22-25, 27-25, 25-22,
Friday night in the Hawaiian Style Classic.
With the score 4-4, Saint Martin’s broke game one
open with a 6-0 run to go ahead 10-4. The Saints never let the
Charleston close the gap to less then three the rest of the game and
rolled to the easy win.
After dropping game two, the Saints fell behind
early in the third game as the Golden Eagles pulled out to an early 5-0
lead. Down 15-8 Saint Martin’s strung together six points including five
consecutive service aces from Kristeen Juarez to pull within one.
Down by two, 24-22, with UC going for game point,
the Saints got three in a row to take the 25-24 advantage. Charleston
would tie it up again on an attack error by the Saints but a kill by
Malia Ibarra and an ace from Juarez, her sixth of the game, would put it
away for the Saints.
The two teams battled in game four, exchanging the
lead multiple times. Tied at 14-14 SMU took the lead and never
surrendered it. The Golden Eagles were able to pull within one but the
Saints were able to fend them off and pick up the win.
Shealun Campisi led the Saints with 16 kills and 11
digs while Andrea Tarbet and Nicole Ostlund had 10 kills apiece. Brianna
Bautista posted 13 digs for SMU and Kanoe Kalalau had 10.
Saint Martin’s had 56 kills in the match to the
Golden Eagles’ 36.
The Saints, now 1-1 on the season, play their final
match of the tournament Saturday against Metro State.
