August
28, 2008
Hilo, HI – Saint Martin’s travelled to Hawaii to
take part in the University of Hawaii at Hilo Hawaiian Style Classic and
faced off against the hosts in their first match falling in three games,
25-12, 25-18, 25-19, Thursday night at the UHH Gymnasium.
After dropping game one to the defending PacWest
champions, the Saints took the early 3-0 lead in game two but a 5-0 run
b the Vulcans would put them on top.
The two teams continued to exchange points until up
14-12 UHH capitalized on a service ace by Laura Rodriguez, two kills
from Kaniu Hernandez and a ball handling error by SMU to pull ahead
18-12. The deficit was too much for the Saints to overcome.
Game three saw Hilo pull out to a 9-2 lead before
the Saints battled their way back. A kill by Andrea Tarbet put Saint
Martin’s within three at 16-13 only to see the Vulcans put together a
6-3 run to put the game just out of reach for the Saints.
Tarbet led the Saints with eight kills and two aces
while Brianna Bautista posted seven digs. Mary Claire Bolo led a
balanced attack for Hawaii Hilo as the Vulcans picked up 33 kills and
eight aces.

on day two of the tournament.
