Track: Saints set new records at GNAC Meet
February 19, 2008
Nampa, ID – Saint Martin’s University track and
field took seventh place on both the men’s and women’s side at the Great
Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships
hosted by Northwest Nazarene University.
John Riak led the charge on the men’s side winning
the mile, his first championship mile event, in 4:21.50. It was Riak’s
third consecutive indoor championship, the other two coming in the
5000m.
"It was a bizarre race that saw two people fall but
John stayed out of trouble to race to a well earned victory," said head
coach Julie Sullivan.
Sam Washington set two new school records at the
meet smashing both the weight throw and the shot. He nearly pulled off
an upset in the shot holding on to the lead going into the final round
but senior Zach Barclay of NNU posted a solid last throw to overtake the
lead. Washington threw 48’4.75” breaking his previous record by more
than two feet and finishing third overall. In the weight throw
Washington placed seventh with a throw of 44’01.50”, five feet better
than his previous best.
On the women’s side Krinda Carlson set a new school
record in the women’s mile finishing with a time of 5:12.35.
Chelsi Claussen took part in both 60m hurdles and
the 60m dash placing third and seventh respectively. She posted a time
of 9.49 in the hurdles and 8.37 in the dash.
With her best ever finish at conference
championships, Jessica Pendon took eighth in the 400m dash with a time
of 1:01.25.
The Saints get right back into it with their outdoor
season beginning on March 8th at the UPS Invite.
