Softball: Homeruns power Saints in split
May 1,
2008
Lacey, WA – Krissy Bassett and Holly Morris both hit
homeruns helping Saint Martin’s to an 8-3 win over Western Washington
University in the nightcap of a doubleheader Thursday at the SMU
Softball Field. Lisa Holombo hit a game tying homer in the first game
but WWU won 2-1 in extra innings.
SMU broke game two open in the bottom of the first
plating five runs. With two on Kristi Sigafoos doubled to score Brandi
Klemm, Bassett then sent a shot over the left field wall to make it 4-1
Saints. Three batters later Morris hit an RBI single to left.
The Vikings were able to get two runs in the top of
the third to make it 5-3 but the Saints answered back with two of their
own in the bottom of the inning as Morris homered to left to put SMU
back up by four.
Klemm was able to shut down the Vikings through the
final four innings to earn the win.
Sigafoos had three hits in the game while Kristine
Kaneshiro, Danny White and Morris had to hits each.
Jamie Herrick gave up one run in the first inning of
game one before holding the Vikings scoreless through the next six
innings and allowing just three hits while striking out three in that
span.
WWU’s Sarah McEnroe did much of the same to the
Saints as she held them scoreless through the first six innings until
with one out in the seventh inning Lisa Holombo hit a solo home run to
tie it 1-1 and send it into extra innings.
With one on and one out in the top of the eighth
Western Washington’s Michelle Wrigley hit into a fielder’s choice but
advanced to second on a throwing error. A single to right from Meghan
Flem was all it took to score Wrigley and give the Vikings the lead and
eventual win.
The Saints will play their final games of the season
this Saturday as they are on the road to take on Seattle University.
