Softball: Saints split with Vikings

Bellingham, WA – Saint Martin’s lost a heartbreaker
1-0 then came back to defeat Western Washington University 6-3 in the
nightcap of a doubleheader Sunday at Viking Field.
Game one was a pitchers dual as neither team could
get on the board. With the score 0-0 in the bottom of the seventh, WWU’s
Liza Teichler reached on an error to start of the inning. The Saints got
two quick outs on a sacrifice bunt and a strike out but Jamie Herrick
then walked three consecutive batters to force the game’s only run.
Sarah McEnroe pitched a three hit shutout for the
Vikings to earn the win. She struck out three and didn’t walk a batter
in the contest. Herrick allowed just three hits in the game but took the
loss.
The Saints rallied on game two, after Western took
an early 3-1 lead SMU put up a five spot in the fifth. Kristine
Kaneshiro hit a two-run double, Holly Morris had an RBI single and Lisa
Holombo hit a solo homerun in the inning.
Alicia Fuchs allowed four hits and three runs over
five innings to earn the win. Brandi Klemm, who threw two scoreless
innings, to pick up the save.
The Saints remain on the road as they head to
Western Oregon on Tuesday the 15th for a makeup game against the Wolves.
