Softball: Saints finish 3-3 at Mizuno Tournament of Champions

Turlock, CA – Saint Martin’s found itself in the
Bronze Division on the final day of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions
hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. They beat Western Washington 3-2 in
their first game of the day but fell in the title game of the Bronze
Division to Chico State 6-4.
Saint Martin’s took the early lead against the
Vikings by plating two runs in the second inning. Kristi Sigafoos led
off the inning with a single and came around to score on a single up the
middle by Lisa Holombo and a Viking error. Holombo later scored on a RBI
single by Alicia Fuchs.
SMU tacked on an insurance run in the fifth as Danni
Ballard singled to score Fuchs from third. With the score 3-1 going into
the bottom of the seventh, Western Washington made things interesting.
WWU’s Caitlin Dotlich led off the inning with a
double to center, advanced to third on a pinch hit single by Morgan
Parkerson and scored on a fielder’s choice. With one on and one out the
Saints were able to get the next two batters to ground out and fly out
to get the win.
Brandi Klemm threw six innings and allowed two runs
on nine hits while walking won to earn her fifth win of the season.
Fuchs picked up the save.
Chico’s Chelsea Lundberg hit a two run home run in
the first inning to give the Wildcats an early 2-1 lead. They would go
on to add two more runs in the third and one each in the fifth and sixth
to beat the Saints.
The Saints pulled to within two in the top of the
seventh as Kristine Kaneshiro doubled for two runs but was thrown out at
third for the final out. Kaneshiro had two hits and three RBI in the
game.
Klemm also had two hits, including a solo shot to
left in the fifth, and scored three of the Saints’ four runs.
Saint Martin’s wrapped up the tournament with a 3-3
record, the best of any GNAC team in the tournament.
The Saints are on the road again this week as they
head to Monmouth, OR to take on Western Oregon University.
