Softball: Saints take one from GCU, fall to Dixie

Turlock, CA – Saint Martin’s defeated Grand Canyon
University 7-2 Saturday afternoon after falling to Dixie State 10-6
earlier in the day at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions.
Krissy Bassett drove in four runs for the Saints
with a RBI double in the second and a three run blast to left center in
the third. Holly Morris belted her second homer of the day in the second
and hit an RBI double to give Saint Martin’s the 6-0 lead.
Grand Canyon was able to get one run in the fourth
on a sacrifice fly but the Saints answered back with one run in the
fifth as Brandi Klemm singled in a run. The Lopes would plate one more
in the seventh but that was all they would get.
Alicia Fuchs picked up her fifth win of the season
allowing just four hits and one walk in five innings of work.
Dixie State got on the board early with two runs in
the top of the first and added on run in both the second and third
innings. The Saints made it 4-3 in the bottom of the third as Morris
homered for two runs and Lisa Holombo singled to drive in a run.
The Rebels held a 5-3 advantage going into the final
inning but broke it open plating five runs capped off by a two run shot
by Haley Schumers to make it 10-3.
SMU would get three back on a two run single by
Kristi Sigafoos and a double by Holombo but it wouldn’t be enough.
Sigafoos was 3 for 4 in the game with two RBI and
two runs scored. Holombo had two hits and drove in two while Morris went
1 for 2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jamie Herrick was tagged with
the loss for her four innings of work.
The Saints will take on Hawaii Pacific again
tomorrow in Silver bracket play.
