Softball: Saints spilt on first day of tourney

Turlock, CA – Saint Martin’s split a pair of games
at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions, losing to Hawaii Pacific 12-2
before beating Chaminade University 4-0.
Brandi Klemm threw a complete game shutout for Saint
Martin’s in their win over Chaminade allowing just five hits while
walking two and striking out five.
Kristi Sigafoos drove in two runs for the Saints on
a two run double in the first. They added one run in the third and
another in the fourth on a ground rule double from Klemm.
Kristine Kaneshiro, Krissy Bassett and Lisa Holombo
accounted for SMU’s other hits with one apiece.
In their first game of the day, SMU was held to six
hits as they were able to plate just two runs which they didn’t pick up
until the bottom of the fifth. Doubles by Kirstin Davidson, Alicia Fuchs
and Danni Ballard would put the Saints on the board.
Hawaii Pacific came out swinging putting up a four
spot in the first inning on five hits. They would add five more in the
second highlighted by a two run homer by Nicole Kalakau and a bases
clearing triple from Nicole Riviera.
The Sea Warriors got their final runs of the game in
the third as Krystal Plunkett sent one over the left field wall for
three more.
Cassy South took the loss for the Saints while
Courtney Kessell remained undefeated on the season for HPU.
Saint Martin’s will play two more games on Saturday
against Dixie State and Grand Canyon University.
