Softball: Saints earn one win through first two days of CWU Tourney Richland, WA

March 5, 2007

Saint Martin’s softball went 1-3 in the CWU Invite beating Northwest Nazarene and losing to Central Washington, Western Washington and Seattle University on the first two days of the tournament.

Central put up six spots in the second and third innings to defeat the Saints 13-0. The Wildcats were led by Mallory Holtman and Kelli Spaulding who had three hits each. Kasey Druffel and Stephanie Burns each added two. Danni Ballard had the lone hit for the Saints.

Linse Vlahovich threw the full five innings for Central walking only two and striking out five. Western Washington got on the board early in game two when Hannah Becker launched a three run homer in the top of the first and the Vikings were able to hold off the Saints to take the win 3-2.

The Saints put up one run in the second on an RBI single by Sonya Ramos and one more in the third on a sacrifice fly by Lisa Holombo.

Ryanne Horton was tagged with the loss, giving up just four hits and striking out eight. Sarah McEnroe picked up the win for the Vikings striking out seven.

The Saints picked up their first win of the season with a 4-3 win over Northwest Nazarene. The Crusaders led 2-1 until the sixth inning when the Saints got two on a double by Alicia Fuchs and single by Karen Waznis. NNU tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff homerun by Vanessa Shaw.

With the score tied 3-3 in the seventh Sonya Ramos hit a single up the middle to score the go ahead run. Fuchs and Marlaina Irwin each had three hits for the Saints. Tana Lingl threw a complete game allowing seven hits on the day.

Seattle was able to pull out a 2-0 victory over the Saints behind a strong pitching performance by Katie Rojano. Rojano allowed just three hits, walked two and fanned nine.

Kirstin Davidson posted a double for the Saints while Ballard and Horton each got singles. SMU got two of its hits in the first inning, but just one off Rojano the remainder of the way.

Horton pitched a solid game allowing just four hits. The Redhawks scored their runs in the second on a RBI double by Sandra Hernandez and in the sixth on a single by Jane Purdy.

The Saints continue play in the invitational both Saturday and Sunday.
