Softball: Saints wrap-up play at CWU Invite

Richland, WA – Saint Martin’s concluded play in the Central Washington University Invitational Saturday and Sunday falling to Montana State Billings, Western Oregon and Central Washington.

In Saturday’s first game the Saints lost to Montana State Billings 11-5. Neither team posted a run through the first three innings and combined for all 16 runs in the final four. The Yellowjackets put up three in the fourth and four more in the fifth. The Saints picked up one in each of the two innings, in the fourth on a solo shot by Holly Morris and fifth on a homerun by Danni Ballard.

The Yellowjackets continued the hit attack with three more runs on three hits in the seventh. The Saints got three on the board in the bottom of the inning on another homer by Ballard.

Ballard led the Saints with three hits and four RBI. Kirstin Davidson went 2-2 on the day with two singles and two walks.

MSUB got two hits each from Terina Stacks and Stephanie Gosselin.

The Wolves used home runs and timely hitting to defeat the Saints 10-5 in the Saints second game on Saturday.

Western Oregon took a 2-0 lead on a two run shot by Trina Dorn in the top of the first. The Saints evened things up in the bottom of the inning on a two run single by Ryanne Horton. They took the lead in the second on a double to left center by Ballard.

The Wolves came out swinging in the third posting four runs on four hits including a two run blast by Jamie Becker. The Wolves went on to score one run in the fourth and fifth. They got two in the sixth on a homerun by Shannon Prochaska.

The Saints got one back in the fifth on a single by Davidson and two in the sixth on a two run single by Katee Nauert but it wasn’t enough as the Wolves took the win.

Ballard Davidson and Morris each had two hits for the Saints.

Brianne Dieringer threw a complete game for the Wolves allowing nine hits.

The Saints faced host Central Washington on the final day of the tournament in the Championship Quarterfinals falling 2-0.

Both teams were held scoreless until Central posted a two spot in the fourth; one on a single by Kelli Spaulding and the other on a Saints error.

The Saints were only able to manage four hits off of Wildcat pitching. Ballard had two, Horton and Morris each had one.

Horton, who threw six innings giving up just three hits and two earned runs, was tagged with the loss.

The Saints return home to take on Western Oregon Saturday at Saints Field.
