April 22, 2006

Bellingham, WA --- Saint Martin's University blanked Western Washington 5-0 in the opening game of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Viking Field.

SMU, which has split its last eight games after a 3-24 start, improved to 7-28 overall and 3-11 in GNAC action. Western dropped to 16-23 overall and 4-9 in league play.

The Saints scored four runs in the bottom of the second off Western starter Ashley Osman. After one run scored on a fielding error, Sonya Ramos (Jr., Sunnyside, WA) plated two more with a single and Courtney Cunningham (Fr., Benton City, WA) followed with a run-scoring double.

Saint Martin's scored again in the third on a single by Nicole Hoerner (Fr., Kennewick, WA). Osman was then relieved by Jen Jorgensen, who retired 10 of the 11 batters she faced, allowing just a single in the sixth.

Tana Lingl (Jr., Auburn, WA) got the win for the Saints with her first shutout of the season, striking out four and walking three.

In the nightcap, the Vikings posted season highs in runs and hits to win 14-6 in five innings to split the GNAC doubleheader.
