Softball: Saints come up short in second day of Tournament of Champions

Turlock, CA --- The Saint Martin’s softball team was
edged by Cal State San Bernardino 3-2 and then fell to San Francisco
State 5-3 Saturday on the second day of the Togo's Tournament of
Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.
San Bernardino got a run in the bottom of the eighth
on a double by Michelle Calderon to snap a 2-2 tie. Saint Martin's
scored its runs in the second inning on a ground out by Karen Waznis
(Jr., Avondale, AZ) and in the sixth on a single by Lisa Holombo (Fr.,
Bonney Lake, WA).
The Saints had five different players tally a hit
and did not commit an error in eight innings of action.
Against San Francisco State, the Saints jumped to a
3-0 lead in the second on singles by Nicole Hoerner (Fr., Kennewick, WA)
and Marlaina Irwin (So., Centralia, WA) and on a fielder's choice, but
the Gators exploded for five runs in the fourth, four of them on a grand
slam home run to left center by Vanessa Rodrigue with two outs. San
Francisco added an insurance run later in the inning.
Carleen Lessard (Jr., Longview, WA) recorded the
loss for the Saints. She pitched four innings, giving up six hits and
five runs while striking out two and walking four. The Saints’ hitting
attack was led by Halley Cey (So., Spokane, WA) and Irwin, each with two
hits.
