Softball: Saints let one slip away, swept by Western Oregon
March 26, 2006
Lacey, WA --- Western Oregon held on for a narrow
one-run victory in the first game (9-8) and then cruised in the nightcap
(10-0) of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader
against Saint Martin's Sunday afternoon at Saints Field.
Saint Martin's fell to 3-20 overall and 1-8 in
conference play with the loss. WOU improved its overall mark to 8-12 and
to 2-0 in the GNAC.
In the first game, Western Oregon rallied back from
a 6-0 deficit, scoring four runs in the third inning and five in the
sixth to take a 9-6 lead.
The Saints, however, made things interesting with a
run in the bottom of the sixth and one more in the seventh. SMU left the
tying run on base when reliever Britni Mink fanned the final Saint
batter to end the game.
Mink pitched three innings to get credit for the
win. Starter Christina Cooke was rocked for five earned runs in two
innings of work, and then Ashley Holstrom pitched two perfect innings of
relief before Mink entered the game.
Lisa Holombo (Fr., Bonney Lake, WA), Nicole Hoerner
(Fr., Kennewick, WA) and Courtney Cunningham (Fr., Benton City, WA) each
had a pair of base knocks for the Saints.
In the second game, the Wolves scored all 10 of
their runs in the first three innings.
Holstrom tossed a three-hit shutout in the
five-inning contest. Including her first-game relief stint, she threw
seven scoreless innings, gave up only three hits, walked no one and
struck out four.
Marlina Irwin (So., Chehalis, WA), Holly Morris
(Fr., Richland, WA) and Sonya Ramos each tallied a hit for the Saints.
Morris extended her hit streak to seven games with her four hits on the
week-end.
The Saints head to California this week (Mar.
31-Apr. 2) for the Best of the West Classic in Turlock, Calif.
