Softball: Seattle slams six homers in sweep of Saints
March 25, 2006
Lacey, WA --- Seattle hit a combined six home runs
on Saturday in sweeping a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball
doubleheader from Saint Martin's by scores of 5-2 and 8-1 at Saints
Field.
The Redhawks (13-9, 3-1 GNAC) needed nine innings
before winning game one. SU sensation Jane Purdy drove in two runs in
the top of the ninth inning to lead the late charge to take game one.
Seattle led 2-0 after two innings. The Saints (3-19,
1-6 GNAC) then tied the game in the third as Katee Nauert (Fr., Mead,
WA) stole home and Alicia Fuchs (So., Randle, WA) had a RBI single.
The game then remained tied until the ninth when
Seattle loaded the bases on a hit batter, walk and error and then got a
run on a walk. Purdy then singled for a pair of insurance runs.
Carleen Lessard (Jr., Longview, WA) pitched the
complete game for the Saints and took the loss allowing four earned runs
with six walks and five strikeouts on five hits.
Erin Kemper started game one and allowed two runs on
five hits in 3.2 innings before Erin Martin came in and finished the
game allowing two hits with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings for SU.
In the second game, Purdy hit a pair of solo home
runs and three other SU players all went deep to account for all but two
of the Redhawks runs.
Saint Martin's scored its lone run in the seventh as
Courtney Cunningham (Fr., Benton City, WA) led off the inning with a
double, advanced on a ground out and scored on an error.
That was the only run Erin Martin gave up on the day
in 12 innings. In the opener, she pitched the final 5 1/3 innings,
allowing two hits and fanning five to record the victory. She pitched a
six-hitter in the nightcap, improving to 8-4, fanning six and walking
just one.
For the Saints, Tana Lingl took the loss allowing
seven earned runs on 12 hits in five innings.
