Softball: Saints nearly pull off upset bid against Humboldt State
March 14, 2006
Lacey, WA --- Nancy Harbeson blasted a three run
home run in the top of the third inning, bringing the Lumberjacks back
from an early 2-0 deficit to beat Saint Martin’s 3-2 in Great Northwest
Athletic Conference softball action Tuesday.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was
suspended in the top of the fourth inning due to rain. The game will
conclude tomorrow with Humboldt leading 3-0.
With one out in the bottom of the first inning, the
Saints’ Alicia Fuchs (So., Randle, WA) was hit by a pitch, advanced to
second on a single by Marlaina Irwin (So., Centralia, WA) and scored on
an error by HSU’s shortstop. Holly Morris (Fr., Richland, WA) followed
with a single, scoring Irwin for a 2-0 lead.
The Lumberjacks answered in the third inning as
Carolyn Cameron singled, Natalie Galletly walked and Harbeson knocked a
three-run home run.
Harbeson’s hit was one of just four for Humboldt,
while the Saints tallied six hits. Irwin went 2-for-3 at the plate for
the Saints.
