Men’s Soccer: Saints lose conference opener
September 22, 2008
Lacey, WA – Seattle Pacific didn’t score until the
71st minute but it would be all they would need as they beat Saint
Martin’s 1-0 in the first Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest
for both teams Monday afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.
The Falcons lone goal came at the 70:56 mark when
Drew Williams served up a corner kick to the far post. Ben Pliskin
headed it across to Colin Kosco who finished it to give SPU the lead.
“We have to work on our perseverance and
discipline,” said head coach Rob Walker. “I’m disappointed about losing
to them 1-0. You have to have a lot of respect for what they did today
but we also have to overcome our difficulties better.”
The Saints out shot the Falcons 12-8 but were unable
to convert on any of their shots. SMU also had the advantage on corner
kicks, 8-1.
“Daniel Palermo and Tucker Maxwell played very well
in the back as did Tony Armitage and Mickey Crudo,” said Walker. “Ruben
Orozco played a good, very skillful game.”
SMU keeper Zac Lubin had just two saves in the game
while Seattle Pacific’s Ben Lovelace had four saves to earn the win.
The Saints, now 1-7 overall, 0-1 in conference, are
on the road next week to take on Montana State Billings and Northwest
Nazarene.
