Men’s Soccer: Saints pick up first win
September
19, 2008
Lacey, WA – A shot by Chase Franklin with just eight
seconds left in the first half was all Saint Martin’s would need as they
earned the 1-0 win over Grand Canyon University Friday afternoon at the
Regional Athletic Complex.
With the clock quickly winding down SMU took a
corner kick with 30 seconds left only to have it instantly sent back out
by a GCU defender. Vlad Voin took a second corner kick with 14 seconds
to go, that was cleared out to Austin Kelley.
Kelley immediately sent the ball outside to Franklin
who fired a shot, from 15 yards out, beyond the outstretched arms of the
Grand Canyon goalkeeper to give the Saints the lead as time expired.
“Ruben Orozco was very good in midfield for us
today. He showed his class and was a good distributor of the ball,” said
head coach Rob Walker.
Saint Martin’s played a solid defensive game and
held the Lopes to just seven shots, only four on goal. Zac Lubin got the
win in goal for the Saints with four saves on the day.
The Saints had some other great scoring
opportunities including a penalty kick but GCU’s keeper Franco
Carotenuto was able to make the stop and get the save.
“This was a perfect way to end our preseason,” said
Walker. “We have some players that have returned from injury and are now
able to put our best squad out there. Hopefully we can step up going
into conference play.”
The Saints, now 1-6 on the season, open up
conference play at home this Monday against Seattle Pacific University.
