Men’s Soccer: Saints can’t recover from first half
September 14, 2008
Walla Walla, WA – Saint Martin’s fell into a 3-0
hole in the first half and couldn’t recover falling 4-1 to Whitman
College Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Whitman’s Jordan Thomas opened the scoring in the
25th minute. When a free kick from the far right side slipped through
the SMU goalkeeper's hands, Thomas was there at the far post to knock
home the loose ball.
Todd Wallenius would score two goals for the
Missionaries within 10 minutes of each other. His first came at the
28:51 mark as he scored from 15 yards out. He then struck again
capitalizing on a rebound off the Saints keeper.
The Missionaries would score again just four minutes
into the second half as Jasper Lipton sent one into the back of the net
on assists by Stephen Phillips and Jerreh Badjie.
Saint Martin’s would get their only goal of the game
in the 63rd minute as Tony Armitage picked up his first collegiate goal
on an assist from Chase Franklin.
“We didn’t manage very well,” said head coach Rob
Walker. “Emotionally we have to push through some things. We got a very
good effort from Chase up front and Tony had a good game wide in
midfield. We had chances both early and late and just didn’t
capitalize.”
Whitman outshot the Saints 15-7 in the game. TJ
Young and Zac Lubin spilt time in goal for the Saints with Young
allowing three goals and getting two saves.
The Saints play at home this Friday, September 19th,
against Grand Canyon University.
