Men’s Soccer: Saints outscored by Jacks
September
12, 2008
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s outshot Humboldt State
18-7 but found itself on the losing end of a 2-1 game Friday afternoon
at the Regional Athletic Complex.
Humboldt scored first in the game as Roland
Demombynes sent a shot at the goal that was saved by SMU keeper Zac
Lubin but Demombynes got the rebound and sent it into the back of the
net on his second attempt.
SMU answered back six minutes later when Austin
Kelley found the goal off a ball that was deflected by the HSU keeper.
The Jacks came out full throttle to start the second
half scoring, what would be the winning goal, just two minutes in.
Demombynes sent a cross to Matt Colwell for the lead.
With just over seven minutes left in the game the
Saints had their final chance to tie as Erik Orozco sent a bullet at the
net only to see it hit off the crossbar.
“The idea of playing safely versus taking risks has
to be on our minds,” said head coach Rob Walker. “We took a liberty or
two out of the back and Humboldt State did a great job of putting us
under pressure and making us pay with well-taken goals.”
Saint Martin’s had its opportunities but couldn’t
convert. Orozco, Vlad Voin and Cody Clark had three shots each in the
game. Lubin had three saves for the Saints while HSU keeper Drew Ryan
had four saves.
“Vlad Voin and Ruben Orozco had very good days. Eric
Orozco was tough coming out of the back and one of the goals at our
complex is still ringing from the vicious shot he took. James Schmid was
a pleasant surprise starting in midfield,” said Walker.
The Saints are on the road playing Whitman College
this Sunday, September 14th.
