Men’s Soccer: Saints lose to Chico
September 7,
2008
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s took the early lead but
couldn’t hold on losing to Cal State Chico 3-1 in non-conference action
Sunday afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.
The Saints scored first in the game as Ruben Orozco
converted the penalty kick at the 12:49 mark to take the early 1-0 lead.
But the Wildcats would knot the game exactly four minutes later as
CSUC’s Zac Crim picked up his first goal of the day on an assist from
Ryan Struckmeyer.
Crim would notch his second goal in the 29th minute
as the Wildcats pulled SMU keeper Zac Lubin out of the goal allowing
Crim to send one off the left post. Kevin Gibson earned the assist.
The Wildcats capped off their scoring five minutes
into the second half as Crim passed it to Kyle Crain who sent it into
the back of the net.
Saint Martin’s outshot the Wildcats 10-6 but SMU was
unable to come up with any goals.
“Our growth has to be measured in what we need to do
within our own attacking area when there are goal scoring opportunities
like we had in the first 15 minutes. We had some very good scoring
chances and just didn’t understand how to convert them,” said head coach
Rob Walker. “In the second half we went up a player and weren’t able to
really use that trump card. We did everything we could to try to push
players forward and didn’t get anything out of it. We are definitely
improved over a year ago but definitely not where I want us to be.”
The Saints have a break before playing Humboldt
State next Friday at the RAC.
