Men’s Soccer: Saints can’t fend off ‘Runners
August 29, 2008
Salt Lake City, UT – Defending Rocky Mountain
Athletic Conference champion, Metro State, proved too much for Saint
Martin’s as they defeated the Saints 3-0 Friday at Westminster College.
The ‘Runners took the lead with their first goal in
the 41st minute as Ola Sandquist scored on a rebound from SMU goalie Zac
Lubin playing the ball off the crossbar.
Metro would quickly extend their lead in the second
half, scoring just two minutes in as Chris Yoder chipped it over Lubin
from seven yards out. Kellen Johnson picked up the assist.
Scott Grode capped off the scoring for the ‘Runners
scoring on a breakaway on the right side at the 85:33 mark with an
assist from Ri Armstrong.
Saint Martin’s was held to just six shots in the
game while Metro got off 12.
“We played pretty balanced in the first half and had
some good chances. Giving up the goal right before the half kind of took
the air out of us,” said head coach Rob Walker. “Playing two games in
two days in the heat was a little bit of a factor for us but it gives us
something to sort out as we continue with preseason.”
The Saints return to Lacey to play Cal State
Dominguez Hills in their first home game of the year on September 5th.
