Men’s Soccer: Saints lose in OT
August 28, 2008
Salt Lake City, UT – A shot by Mesa State with less
than two minutes to go in the overtime period was enough to seal the 2-1
victory for the Mavericks over Saint Martin’s Thursday at Westminster
College.
The Saints struck first as Tucker Maxwell converted
a penalty kick at the 80:28 mark to put SMU up 1-0. Less than four
minutes later MSU’s Eric Anderson tied things up sending the game into
overtime.
The score remained tied through most of the overtime
until with 1:17 to go Mesa State’s Tim Lynn sent a shot into the left
side of the net off a corner kick from Mitchell Reid.
“We got great games from some of our new players
today,” said head coach Rob Walker. “Tony Armitage and Mickey Crudo
played well in the back and Xan Nixon did well up front. Captain Tucker
Maxwell showed great leadership.”
Zac Lubin covered the goal for the Saints and made
six saves before giving up the game-winner.
“All in all, if you take a look at where we started
out as a first year program a year ago and where we ended up today,
we’re really looking good. Mesa is a strong program but we put ourselves
forward very well today,” said Walker.
The Saints get ready to take on Metro State on
Friday.
