Men’s Soccer: Saints lose to Vikings
September 29,
2007
Lacey, WA – Western Washington used two second half
goals to defeat Saint Martin’s 3-1 in men’s soccer conference action
Saturday afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.
Western Washington picked up their first goal right
before the break in the 42nd minute as Gibson Bardsley sent a cross from
Matt Pele into the net. The Vikings added another goal just under 10
minutes into the second half as Samir Vejo scored with an assist from
Oliver Wellman.
The Saints got on the board at the 65:04 mark when
Chase Franklin picked up his first goal of the season on an assist by
Daniel Palermo. Western would add an insurance run in the 82nd minute.
Michael Ricci scored off the deflection on a save by the SMU goalie.
“We had some great moments today,” said head coach
Rob Walker. “Part of our growth as a team and a program is happening
right before our eyes. Our hope is that we mature in ‘soccer time’ and
not say in ‘geologic time.’ We are making good progress and I know the
boys really want to play well and get a result. But, like everything
worth waiting for, this process will take time.”
The Vikings outshot the Saints 17-9. Zac Lubin
picked up eight saves in goal for Saint Martin’s.
“Tucker Maxwell had a solid game in the back and
Vlad Voin and Daniel Palermo were solid in midfield and up front. Chase
Franklin playing in his second game as a Saint and scoring his first
goal was a nice addition to our team too. Most importantly, we welcomed
back Jesse Ramos to our team today for the first time in almost a month
(due to injury),” added Walker.
The Saints will be at home again next Thursday,
October 4th as they take on Montana State Billings.
