Men’s Soccer: Whitman gets past SMU

September 4, 2007

Lacey, WA – Andy Huntington scored two of Whitman’s four goal as the Missionaries defeated Saint Martin’s 4-0 in men’s soccer action Tuesday afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.

Whitman picked up their first goal 10 minutes in when Stephen Phillips sent one into the net on an assist from Jerrah Badjie. Huntington would get his first goal of the game just six minutes later.

The score remained the same through the first half and much of the second half until in the 71st minute when Huntington recorded his second goal.

Three minutes later, in the 74th minute Jasper Lipton fielded a cross from Joe Johnson and slotted it into the left post.

“Today’s game followed the same formula as our performance last week against Humboldt State. The poor play today is no reflection on Whitman (or HSU last week),” said head coach Rob Walker. “In these two games that we have played poorly, the quality of play of our opposition has been quite good. There is no doubt that we struggled today against a well-coached, talented and very able team.”

The Missionaries outshot the Saints 13-9. WC took six corner kicks to SMU’s zero.

Zac Lubin and T.J. Young split time in the goal with Lubin recording four saves and Young picking up one.

“I know the men want to play well against a very talented and experienced Seattle Pacific side this Friday, so I’ll have to make sure that the proper preparation and motivation is in place,” added Walker.

The Saints will face SPU Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Regional Athletic Complex.
