Men’s Soccer: Saints defeated by Lumberjacks
August 30, 2007
Arcata, CA – Saint Martin’s was unable to hold off
hot shooting Humboldt State University as they fell 7-0 in the opening
game of the HSU Quiznos Soccer Classic Thursday afternoon.
"A John Lennon song with the lyrics ‘nobody told me
there would be days like this' summed up the Saints' afternoon against
Humboldt State,” said head coach Rob Walker. “The 2-0 half time was
pretty positive. There was quite a bit of good soccer played and a
couple of little mistakes had proven to be the difference at half time.”
The Lumberjacks got the scoring started early as
Roland Demombynes picked up a goal just under three minutes into the
game on a through ball from Eric Webster. Demombynes would get his
second goal at the 20 minute mark to give Humboldt the 2-0 lead.
HSU turned it up in the second half scoring five
goals the first of which came within the first minute. Demombynes would
pick up the hat trick with his third goal in the 68th minute off of a
Saint Martin’s turnover.
The Lumberjacks would pick up goals from Adam
Tschannen, Zlatan Sahmanovic and Trel Mangarin before the game was over.
Humboldt outshot Saint Martin’s 23 to 10 in the game.
“We gave up a goal at the beginning of the second
half and the "air" went right out of the balloon. When we look back on
the game, we can point to a few occasions where we needed to perform at
a little higher level and execute a key pass or tackle with better
execution,” added Walker. “Humboldt punished us and then went at us with
a good deal of effort. To their credit, they crushed us in the second
half and we have to overcome some physical and mental issues that are
stopping some very encouraging soccer. Tucker Maxwell, Vlad Voin, Erik
Orozco were professional in their approach to a very difficult affair.”
The Saints get set to take on Notre Dame de Namur
Saturday at the HSU Classic.
