Men’s Basketball: Saints comeback falls short
February 14, 2008
Seattle, WA – Saint Martin’s battled back from a 17
point second half deficit to pull within three but fell just short of
the win, 74-68, against Seattle University Thursday night at the
Connolly Center.
With 9:32 left in the game the Redhawks held a 62-45
advantage but a 22-8 run by the Saints would slash the deficit to three
at 71-68 with one minute to go.
Seattle then turned it over giving the Saints a
chance to get closer but they couldn’t capitalize and were forced to
foul. The Redhawks sank three of four free throws to go up by six and
put the game away.
“We settled down in the second half,” said head
coach Keith Cooper. “We did a great job of battling and giving ourselves
a chance to win it. It was a tough loss but the kids really gutted it
out and made a heck of a comeback. We are a little banged up and just
have to get healthy.”
Brendan Campbell posted a double-double to lead the
Saints with 14 points and a game high 15 rebounds. Bill Richardson and
Jake Linton, 7-7 from the line, added 12 points apiece. Richardson added
eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Redhawks were led by Michael Knight with a game
high 17 points while Chris Gweth added 13.
The Saints beat Seattle on the boards 42-33 but
struggled shooting three pointers; SU was seven for 13 from behind the
arc while Saint Martin’s hit just two threes on the night.
The Saints travel to Montana State Billings to take
on the Yellowjackets this Saturday in GNAC action.
