Men’s Basketball: Saints can’t stop Falcons

January 26, 2008

Seattle, WA – Jake Linton had a game high 30 points for Saint Martin’s but Seattle Pacific had five players in double figures helping them to a 89-79 victory over the Saints in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Brougham Pavilion.

The Saints were able to capture the lead in the first half and went up 30-26 on a three by Jake Linton with 5:16 to go.

SPU would string together a 13-0 run to take a 39-32 lead. A jumper by Brendan Campbell at the 1:14 mark would cut the Saints’ deficit to five points going into the break.

Saint Martin’s battled back in the second half. Linton hit a jumper with 12:52 on the clock to cut SPU’s lead to two at 51-49. But the Falcons would score 16 of the next 22 points to take a 12 point advantage.

The Saints would pull to within seven but couldn’t manage to get any closer. Forced to foul, SMU sent Seattle Pacific to the line 16 times over the final three minutes and the Falcons hit 13 shots.

“I thought it was a good game between two good, upper level teams in our conference,” said head coach Keith Cooper. “SPU has been in a lot more of those types of games but I liked the character of our kids and how they battled the whole way. We took good care of the ball; we executed and took good shots but so did SPU.”

SMU shot 50 percent from the field but the Falcons hit 55.2 percent of their shots and were 10-25 from behind the arc while the Saints were just 3-10.

Brendan Campbell had 16 points and six rebounds for the Saints while Bill Richardson added 14 points and six boards of his own.

“I’m pleased with how we played tonight; my only disappointment is that with as great of fan support as we had we couldn’t give them a win. It was awesome to see the support we had tonight on the road in a hostile gym,” said Cooper.

The Saints have a bye next Thursday but are back at home on Saturday to take on Western Oregon University.
