Men’s Basketball: Saints stumble in second half, lose to Humboldt
November 17, 2007
Seattle, WA – Saint Martin’s shots went cold in the
second half as they lost a halftime lead and fell to Humboldt State
87-69 Saturday night at the Connolly Center in game three of the Elgin
Baylor Tip-off Classic hosted by Seattle University.
Humboldt built up a 10 point advantage with just
over 12 minutes remaining in the half only to see the Saints put
together a 21-10 run to take the lead. Saint Martin’s would go up by
seven before HSU’s Grayson Moyer hit a three with 11 seconds left to cut
the Saints’ lead to four going into the break.
The Jacks came back with a vengeance in the second
half scoring 10 of the first 12 points in the half to regain the lead.
They would maintain their position for the rest of the game picking up
the victory.
“We played really good the first half. They came out
and got up a little bit and we came right back and took a nice lead into
the half,” said head coach Keith Copper. “I think last night’s overtime
game fatigued our legs a little bit in the second half which might have
had something to do with our lackluster shooting especially from the
perimeter.”
Bill Richardson and Jake Linton led the Saints with
14 points each; Linton was 14-14 from the free throw line. Brendan
Campbell had 12 points while Tyler Nixon added seven rebounds.
“Brendan, Michael (McIver), Bill and Blake (Poole)
all played well. Our front line did a nice job scoring we just didn’t
make the perimeter shots we needed to in order to beat that good of a
team,” added Cooper.
No. 9 ranked Humboldt shot 60 percent from the field
in the second half and shot 50 percent from the three. The Saints shot
89 percent from the line but we unable to connect from the perimeter.
“We got better, that’s what we wanted to do this
weekend; we improved each night,” said Cooper.
The Saints head to California next weekend to take
part in the Cal State LA Classic where they will face off against Cal
State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
