Saint Martin's couldn't fend off a hot shooting
Western Washington University losing their final game of the season
86-69 Saturday night at Carver Gymnasium.
The Saints led 26-20 with under three minutes left
to go in the first half, but the Vikings outscored the Saints 18-4 to
close out the half and take a 38-30 lead into the break.
WWU continued to increase the gap in the second half
going up by 13 with just under 13 minutes on the clock. SMU battled back
to narrow the gap to three with 8:23 left.
Western was able to score 10 consecutive points to
give them a 74-61 lead with 4:13 to play, a deficit the saints couldn't
overcome.
The Vikings controlled the boards pulling down 51
rebounds to the Saints 30.
"They started some really big guys who pounded us on
the glass," said head coach Keith Cooper. "The guys did a nice job of
battling and got themselves back into the game. they played hard
tonight."
Jake Linton led the Saints with 22 points. Brendan
Campbell had 12 points and Stephon Harris added eight.
"Jake played his usual good game. Brendan did well
against a big front line. Joe played a great second half and hit a
couple of big shots," added Cooper. "Next year will be an exciting
year."
The Saints finished the season 7-9 in conference and
10-17 overall.
