Men’s Basketball: Saints upset by Crusaders
February 16, 2007
Nampa, ID (February 15) – A slow first half and
mental errors cost Saint Martin’s a win as they fell 88-78 to Northwest
Nazarene University Thursday night at the Johnson Sports Center.
The Saints jumped out early in the first half
quickly going up by 11 before the Crusaders came back to tie it 29-29.
With 5:32 left on the clack NNU took the lead and continued to build on
it scoring 11 points and holding the Saints scoreless for the remainder
of the half.
Saint Martin’s rallied in the second half tying the
game and taking the lead on two made free throws by Justin Alexander
nine minutes into the half. But the Crusaders were able to regain the
lead and hold off the Saints for the rest of the half.
Jake Linton had a game high 23 points for the
Saints. Stephon Harris added 12 points and Trevor Dunstan had 11.
The Crusaders had a total of six players in double
figures on the night including Tim Ireland who posted 20 and Kendall
Gielow with 17.
The Crusaders took advantage of their free throw
opportunities going 22-26 while the Saints were only 16-25.
“This was a very tough loss for us tonight,” said
head coach Keith Cooper. “You have to give NNU credit; they came out
played well, made some big shots and made their free throws. This was a
game that we should have won, that we could have won, that we needed to
win and we didn’t. We fought back in the second half and took the lead
but we had way too many mental mistakes at critical times that cost us.”
The Saints are back at home this Saturday as they
take on the Seattle Pacific University Falcons.
