Men’s Basketball: Saints suffer second conference loss
February 2, 2007
Fairbanks, AK (January 1) – Saint Martin’s
University men’s basketball fell to the University of Alaska Fairbanks
75-67 Thursday night at the Patty Center.
The Nanooks jumped ahead early in the first half
going up by nine with 13 minutes to go. The Saints were able to pull
within one but Fairbanks quickly built the lead back up and took a six
point lead into the break up 33-27.
The Saints battled their way back in the second
half. With 11:51 on the clock the Saints took a one point lead on a
layup by Justin Alexander. But two made free throws by UAF’s Kenny
Barker put the Nanooks back on top, he then hit two consecutive layups
to increase the lead to five. The Nanooks were able to build their lead
to as much at 11 points in the half. Joe Chirhart hit two three-pointers
in the last 17 seconds but it wasn’t enough as the Nanooks went on take

Jake Linton led the Saints with 15 points going 7
for 8 from the line. Brendan Campbell added 14 points. Trevor Dunstan
posted 12 points and Tyler Nixon pulled down 10 rebounds.
“Jake played well despite being a little sore. He
rolled his ankle early but came back and played a tough game,” said
assistant coach Dan Barfoot. “Trevor came up big in both rebounds and
scoring tonight and Brendan went out and played a hard fought 38
minutes.”
The Nanooks had four players in double figures.
Kenny Baker had a game high 24 points while Mike Titus posted 17. Jushay
Rockett and Steven Sandles both had 11 points for Fairbanks.
“It was a close game throughout but they pulled away
at the end largely because Kenny Barker and Jushay Rockett came through
and made some big shots that finished us off at the end,” added Barfoot.
The Saints stay in Alaska for a game against the
Alaska Anchorage Seawolves this Saturday.
