Men’s Basketball: Saints dominate Wildcats
January
12, 2007
Ellensburg, WA (January 11) – Saint Martin’s men’s
basketball put together a solid outing to defeat Central Washington
University 84-73 Thursday at the Nicholson Pavilion.
“It was a very good win for our guys. Though their
record doesn’t quite show it, it’s still the same Central team that was
picked number one in conference and number twelve nationally at the
beginning of the season. They are still a very talented team,” said head
coach Keith Cooper. “Central is a difficult place to play so anytime you
can win there it’s definitely a good day. I’m real proud of our guys;
this was a great victory.”
The game was close to start out the first half. Down
19-18 with 9:09 left to go the Saints went on a 17-0 run to go up 35-19.
The Wildcats managed to knock down eight points in the final minutes and
the Saints went into the break up 41-27.
Saint Martin’s maintained their control the entire
second half going up by as much as 20. But the Wildcats battled back
going on a 12-0 run to pull within six with 7:46 to go. The Saints were
able to stop Central’s comeback though the Wildcats were able to pull
within five twice in the final five minutes. The Saints then outscored
the Wildcats 10-4 in the final two minutes to take the win.
Jake Linton posted a game high 21 points. Brendan
Campbell added 17 points and 6 rebounds. Stephon Harris had 14 points
while Trevor Dunstan had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Tyler Monk led the Wildcats with 17 points while
Tremaine Curry and Grant Assink both added 12.
Saint Martin’s was beat on the boards 42-31 but
forced the Wildcats into 24 turnovers. The Saints also shot 48.2 percent
from the field and held Central to just 38.8 percent.
“Stephon did a tremendous job on Lance Den Boer. He
held him to four points with one field goal and two free throws. That’s
great on Lance who’s one of the best scorers in the conference. Brendan
was solid inside all night. Jake really controlled the game and hit some
big shots down the stretch,” added Cooper. “The entire team, one through
eleven, all did some positive things out on the floor. It was a very
good team effort. This was the best game we’ve played all year.”
The Saints get set to take on Seattle University
Saturday at the Connolly Center in Seattle.
