January 8, 2007

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s University men’s basketball forward Brendan Campbell has been selected as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference co-Player of the Week, women’s basketball guard Jamey Gelhar was awarded honorable mention for her efforts.

Campbell posted 22 points and pulled down six boards to help the Saints to a one-point victory over Western Oregon University in their conference opener. Campbell went 7-11 from the field and 7-8 from the line.

“Brendan did a great job of letting the offense come to him. He took some great shots,” said men’s head coach Keith Cooper. “It’s nice to see a kid who is one of the hardest workers and a great leader get attention from others and get recognized for all the hard work he’s put in. Brendan is a good example of things coming to those who work hard.”

Campbell shares the honor with Ryan Webb of Seattle University. Webb tied his career high 18 points helping lead the Redhawks to a win over Northwest Nazarene.

Jamey Gelhar received honorable mention on the women’s side for her performances this past week. She scored 41 points in two contests including 30 in a 10-point loss to Western Washington. In the two games Gelhar made 12-22 shots and went 14-15 from the line. She also had nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

“Jamey really stepped up to the challenge this week. Not only did she show she can score, but she showed poise and leadership. She works as hard on both ends of the floor as any player I have ever coached,” said women’s head coach Tim Healy.
