Men’s Basketball: Saints battle in two tough games at Sonoma State Tourney

December 10, 2006

Sonoma, CA (December 8) – Brendan Campbell had a game high 22 points and was one of four Saints in double figures but it wasn’t enough as Saint Martin’s fell to Sonoma State, 93-86, in double overtime at the opening day of the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic at Rohnert Park Friday.

The Saints were down by 11 at the half but battled back to take the lead with 10:10 left in regulation. SSU then went on an 18-8 run to go up by nine with 5:36 left. SMU tied it up 66-66 with 2:29 left on a pair of foul shots by Brendan Campbell. He then put the Saints up with a layin with 1:43 left but Sonoma’s Patrick Mitchell tied the game with 1:11 remaining to force overtime.

Sonoma got up by four in overtime but Campbell again helped rally the Saints. He hit another layin to pull within two and tied the game on two foul shots with only six seconds left to fore the second extra period.

Sonoma broke the 78-78 tie right out of the gate and never trailed the rest of the second overtime to earn the win.

Campbell pulled down 12 boards on the night to earn a double-double. Stephon Harris had 18 points and eight rebounds. Greg O’Neal posted 15 points and Jake Linton had 14.

Both teams posted the exact same numbers from the field going 32-69. The Saints put up a higher percentage from the three but were outscored at the foul line 25-16.

“It was a heck of a basketball game,” said head coach Keith Cooper. “It was like two heavyweights slugging it out; just a great game. We lost to a good team on their floor. Stephon played very well, Brendan did an excellent job, Greg and Jake both played good too. The only problem is that those four guys each played over 40 minutes in the game.”

Saint Martin’s went up against Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday on the final day of the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic. Jake Linton posted 28 points for the Saints but Cal State Monterey Bay rallied to beat Saint Martin’s 87-83.

The Saints led by as many as 10 points in the first half and went into the break with a 49-42 lead. SMU led for most of the second half until the Otters went up by one with 9:22 left. CSUMB continued to build on their lead and eventually posted a 10 point lead with just 46 seconds left. The Saints continued to battle scoring 10 points in the last 28 seconds but it wasn’t enough as the Otters took the win.

Linton, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored 17 of his points in the second half and was 10-13 from the field. The Saints also got a big night from Trevor Dunstan who scored 12 points. Brendan Campbell posted 10 points and eight rebounds.

“We just ran out of gas,” said Cooper. “We battled back to within one but couldn’t quite put it away. They were a lot quicker and we couldn’t get the stops when we needed to. We tried to do anything to hold them off and just couldn’t. Jake played well; he had 10 points in the last 30 seconds. Brendan played really well again. He came in and played 36 minutes today after playing so long last night; he’s a warrior. Trevor came in, shot the ball well and had some really big points for us.”

The Saints’ next game will be back at home this Saturday, December 16th as the take on Warner Pacific at the SMU Pavilion.
