Men’s Basketball: Saints lose to a tough Chaminade team
December 4, 2006
Honolulu, HI (December 2) – Saint Martin’s men’s
basketball team, while battling through injury, couldn’t keep up with a
strong Chaminade University losing 92-73 Friday night at McCabe Gym.
Chaminade jumped out to an early lead going up
30-12. The Saints battled back and got to within 12 on a layin by Justin
Alexander with 12 seconds left to go into the break down 44-32. The
Swords came out strong in the second half going on a 21-6 run to
increase their lead to 27. The Saints continued to fight and scored the
last nine points of the game but it was too little too late.
Greg O’Neal led the Saints with 17 points on the
night. Justin Alexander and Tyler Nixon posted 13 and 12 points
respectively. Stephon Harris added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Chaminade had six players in double figures
including Hayden Heiber, Darrell Birton, Zack Whiting, Marko Kolaric,
Mike Green, and James Francisco. The Swords also shot 51 percent from
the floor and 41 percent from the three.
SMU shot 42 percent from the floor, 38 percent from
the three and only 33 percent from the line. CUH was 58 percent from the
line, going 10-17.
“Chaminade is a very good team. It was a tough game,
they got up early but we scrapped with them through most of the second
half,” said head coach Keith Cooper. “With all the injuries we’ve got
I’m real proud of the heart the kids are showing, we’re making strides,
to play with that good of a team, as banged up as we are and not quit.
We’re learning; we’re growing.”
The Saints have their first home game of the season
Tuesday the 5th as they take on Notre Dame de Namur on Military
Appreciation Night at the SMU Pavilion.
