March 18, 2008

Spokane, WA – Saint Martin’s got a total of six basketball student-athletes, four women and two men, named to the 2007-08 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Basketball Academic all-conference team.

Sade Smith posted the best grade point average among the 52 scholar athletes with a 3.94 GPA. Smith is a senior majoring in psychology.

Brendan Campbell was one of three athletes to make it to the team for the third year in a row. Campbell, a senior biology major, posted a 3.49 GPA.

Selected for the second time in as many years was Jake Linton, a junior who is majoring in business and holds a 3.33 grade point.

Smith and Linton were also named to the ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA College Division Academic All-District basketball teams.

“It’s good to see Brendan and Jake recognized for their academics and athletics. They both work very hard in the classroom and on the floor,” said men’s head coach Keith Cooper.

The women’s team had three first time selections including Amy Layton, Jamey Gelhar, and Megan Busch. A senior biology major, Layton posts a 3.84 GPA. Gelhar is a sophomore business major with a 3.54 GPA while Busch has a 3.50 grade point as a sophomore math major.

“We have always stressed classroom performance in our program and this year is another example of what good students can accomplish both on the court and in the classroom. I feel very privileged to coach these student-athletes,” said women’s head coach Tim Healy.

To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
