Cross Country: Saints start off season with a bang

September 6, 2008

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s John Riak and Josiah Price finished first and second in the men’s 8k while Joscelyn Minton took second for the host Saints on the women’s side in the SMU Invitational held on the Lacey campus Saturday.

Riak took the lead at the beginning of the third lap and continued to pull away from the pack finishing with a time of 26:17.00. Price, who maintained a steady spot toward the front, fell into third place on the final lap but found his kick down the stretch to pull into second in a time of 26:29.40.

Minton posted a time of 23:21.50, fifteen seconds behind Jane Larson of Seattle Pacific who took first. Minton’s second place finish was the highest ever for a Saint in the 6k race. With her finish, Minton prevented SPU from sweeping the top five as they finished 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

The Saints had two other runners finish in the top ten as Annie Laweryson and Kyle Van Santen both finished ninth in their respective races. Laweryson posted a time of 24:55.30 while Van Santen finished in 27:26.70.

"I was really proud of everyone today,” said head coach Julie Sullivan. “We have had a week that we do not want to repeat, and I knew there were some heavy hearts going into the meet, plus some nervous freshman, so there was a real mixed bag and I wasn't sure what we were going to get. Everyone, and I mean everyone, stepped up and this was one of our most successful home meets."

As a team the men finished second with 55 points, just five behind meet winners Lewis and Clark. The women took third as a team with 85 points.

Saint Martin’s will race again next weekend when they take part in the GNAC Preview Meet in Yakima, WA.
