Cross Country: Riak qualifies for
Nationals
November 6, 2006
Oroville, CA (November 4) – Saint Martin’s John Riak
qualified for the National Championships. Riak finished fourth on
Saturday at the NCAA West Regional cross country meet at the Lake
Oroville Forebay Aquatics Center.
Riak earned an individual berth with the best finish
by a GNAC runner with a time of 32:24.52. He beat out David Kiplagat of
Alaska Anchorage who took home first place at the GNAC Championship
meet. Kiplagat finished with a time of 32:31.55 to place fifth. Riak was
among five GNAC runners to earn all-region honors in the men’s race,
which go to the Top 15 finishers.
“John ran a fantastic race,” said head coach Julie
Sullivan. “He ran a really smart race, he didn’t go off with the leading
group, he stayed back and just worked his way through and picked people
off.”
Because of his outstanding performance at Regionals,
Riak was honored as the GNAC male Athlete-of-the-Week.
The NCAA national meet will be held Nov. 18 in
Pensacola, Fla.
