Baseball: Saints defeat Yellowjackets
April 20,
2008
Billings, MT – Saint Martin’s used a solid offensive
attack to take game one against Montana State Billings 14-13 and timely
hitting to earn the 8-4 victory in game two Saturday at Pirtz Field.
In the opener, the Saints put up four runs in the
second on three hits but Billings scored three in the bottom half of the
inning to take a 5-4 lead. SMU tied it in the fourth as Shane
Schoeneberg led off the inning with a triple and scored on a single by
Tom Barlow.
They would add two more runs in the fifth and sixth
to take a 10-7 lead into the ninth. In their half of the inning Saint
Martin’s loaded the bases on consecutive walks to Schoeneberg, Barlow
and Nate Baker. Brandon Kuykendall then hit a bases clearing double and
scored on a groundout by Craig Yuhas, giving SMU a 14-7 lead.
MSUB, however, used two hits, two walks, a hit
batter and two errors to score six runs in the bottom of the ninth
before the Saints were able to put a cap on the game.
Luke Abbott led the Saints at the plate going 4 for
4 with two RBI. Kuykendall, Yuhas, Michael McIver, and Corey Grayson had
two hits apiece. Yuhas had the game’s lone homerun.
In the second game the Saints snapped a 4-4 tie with
four runs in the top of the seventh. Kuykendall singled to score Baker
then came around to score on a single by Yuhas. McIver then homered to
right center to tack on two more runs.
McIver led the SMU with two hits and was one of
three Saints to drive in two runs, along with Schoeneberg and Abbott.
Nick Bolthouse tallied his fourth win allowing seven
hits and three earned in six innings of work.
The Saints’ twinbill against the Yellowjackets
scheduled for Sunday was cancelled due to snow.
