Baseball: Saints come up short against Vulcans
March 27, 2008
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s fell behind early and
couldn’t come back as they lost to the University of Hawaii Hilo 10-7 in
non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Saints Field.
Ronel Trias led off the game with a double down the
left field line for Hilo and scored on back to back singles. A ground
out and single later in the inning would give the Vulcans the 3-0 lead.
Hilo tacked on five more in the fourth inning capped
off by a two run single to right center by Shane Kessel. They would add
two more in the fifth.
Saint Martin’s plated one run in the fourth, fifth
and sixth innings. They cut into UHH’s lead with two runs in the seventh
on an RBI single by Nate Baker and a sacrifice fly by Craig Yuhas.
The Saints tried to rally in the ninth. Andy Cole
singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a single by
Baker. Tanner Gronowski would bring Baker home three batters later on a
single to left to pull within three but that’s as close as they would
get.
Carlo Ramirez led the Saints with three hits
including a triple and two singles. Cole, Baker and Brandon Kuykendall
had two hits apiece.
Brian Shannon picked up the win for the Vulcans
throwing seven innings and allowing five runs while walking two and
striking out three. Pat Capone was hit with the loss for the Saints.
Saint Martin’s will play a doubleheader tomorrow
against Hilo starting at noon at Saints Field.
