Baseball: Wolves take four from Saints

Monmouth, OR – After a rainout on Sunday, Saint
Martin’s wrapped up their four game series against Western Oregon
University Monday falling 9-4 and 9-1, after losing 11-5 and 5-3 on
Saturday at the WOU Baseball Field.
In game one Saint Martin’s picked up two runs the
top of the fourth on an RBI triple by Brandon Kuykendall followed by a
RBI ground out by Craig Yuhas to take the 2-1 lead. Western Oregon
answered back with a three spot in the bottom half of the inning
highlighted by a two-run homerun to left by Tyler Moore.
SMU would regain the lead on singles by Kuykendall
and Luke Abbott and a double by Yuhas but the Wolves would again do
damage in their half of the inning. They scored six runs on three hits
and three costly Saint errors.
Mike Eisenhauer allowed just two hits over the final
three innings to pick up the complete game win. Andrew Neisinger was
tagged with the loss for SMU.
Nate Baker led the Saints with three hits while
scoring twice. Shane Schoeneberg, Kuykendall, and Abbott had two hits
apiece.
Saint Martin’s again took the early lead in game two
plating two runs in the top of the third. Schoeneberg led off the inning
with a double down the right field line and scored on a triple to right
center by Andy Cole. Cole would come in to score on a RBI ground out by
Baker.
The Wolves quickly captured the lead with for runs
in the bottom of the third on four singles, one double and a sacrifice
fly. They would tack on an insurance run in the as Drew Humphrey singled
in a run. SMU added one more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Cole
but that was as close as they would get.
Schoeneberg had three hits for the Saints including
two doubles and a single. Andrew Braegelmann was the only other Saint
with more than one hit in the game.
Pat Capone, who threw all six innings for the
Saints, took the loss.
Game three saw WOU jump out to a 2-0 lead in the
bottom of the first as Humphrey and Tyson Nelson both singled through
the left side to drive in runs. They would pick up another run in the
third and three more in the fourth to go up 6-0.
Saint Martin’s got their first run in the fifth when
Kuykendall walked then came around to score on a Yuhas single.
Down 9-1 in the ninth SMU tried to rally. After
Baker walked the Saints strung together four consecutive singles from
Kuykendall, Yuhas, Abbott, and Tom Barlow to pick up three runs. But
after a pitching change the Wolves were able to get a double play to end
the game.
Yuhas had three singles and two runs batted in for
the Saints. WOU was led by Humphrey who was 5 for 5 with five RBI. Scott
Leshner was hit with the loss.
Western Oregon pounded out four runs on four hits in
the first and five runs on five hits in the second inning of game four
coupled with three SMU errors to take the commanding 9-0 lead. The
Wolves were shut down the rest of the way as they picked up just one hit
throughout the duration of the game.
SMU was unable to find their offensive groove as WOU
pitching allowed just five hits in the game. The Saints got their lone
run in the fourth as Cole led off the inning with a triple and scored on
a groundout.
Western Oregon starter Ryan Smith threw four innings
an allowed just three hits while striking out one and walking one to
earn the win. Nick Bolthouse, who picked up the loss, allowed just two
earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Saint Martin’s, now 12-11 overall and 8-7 in the
GNAC, will take on the University of Hawaii Hilo this week in a
non-conference four game series at Saints Field scheduled to start on
Thursday.
