March 15, 2008 Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s combined for 23 hits and 22 runs to sweep Montana State Billings, 12-6 and 10-4, on day one of the weekend series at Saints Field. SMU scattered 12 hits in game one including two apiece from Shane Schoeneberg, Andy Cole, Brandon Kuykendall, Craig Yuhas, and Tom Barlow. Schoeneberg homered to left in the third to put the Saints on the board. Two innings later Kuykendall hit a three run shot over the left field wall to put SMU up 6-1. Billings added two runs in both the sixth and eighth innings but the Saints broke it open with four runs in the seventh then tacked on two more in the eighth. Andrew Neisinger earned the win pitching 7 2/3 innings allowing five runs while striking out three and walking just one. Saint Martin’s got another stellar pitching performance in game two as Michael McIver threw five shutout innings giving up just five hits while fanning five. The Saints jumped on Billings early scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first as all nine hitters reached base. Schoeneberg led off the inning with a triple and scored on a throwing error by the second baseman. A base hit followed by back to back walks would load the bases and MSUB would get their first out of the inning on a fielder’s choice play at the plate. Singles by Andrew Braegelmann and Barlow would bring in three more runs. Four batters later Cole capped off the innings with a bases clearing triple down the right field line. They would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two run single by Nate Baker. The Yellowjackets picked up all of their runs in the sixth, highlighted by a three run triple by Nick Rupert. Brian Strom was tagged with the loss for the Yellowjackets who drop to 4-10 on the season, 0-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. The Saints, now 10-7 overall, 6-3 in GNAC, will take on Billings again tomorrow in the conclusion of the four game series.
