Baseball: Saints take two at LCSC Tournament

Lewiston, ID – Saint Martin’s won their final two games at Guardian Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Tournament defeating the University of British Columbia 17-3 and Montana State Billings 8-4. They fell to Western Oregon 10-3 and Lewis-Clark State College 12-5 in their first two outings.

The Saints came out on all cylinders against British Columbia scoring 17 runs on 16 hits. They got on the board early with three runs in the first with two bases loaded walks and one bases loaded hit batsman.

SMU added four more in the fourth on RBI singles by Nate Baker and Luke Abbott. They would plate three runs in each of the next two innings before scoring their final four runs in the seventh. Andy drew a bases loaded walk for the first run followed by a bases clearing double by Baker.

Baker scored four runs and drove in four for the Saints. He and Shane Schoeneberg had three hits apiece. Andy Cole, Brandon Kuykendall, Craig Yuhas, Tom Barlow, and Abbott each had two hits.

Pat Capone picked up his second win of the year surrendering just four hits and two runs while striking out five.

The Yellowjackets got on the board in the first inning as Seth Moir hit an RBI single to right field. They would get three more just one inning later on four hits, including a triple by Jeff Ridgeway.

SMU got one run in the third courtesy of back-to-back walks. They tied the game in the sixth on a Yellowjacket throwing error and two-run pinch-hit single by Andrew Salinas.

The Saints took the lead in the seventh inning scoring four runs on just one hit with two more MSUB errors to account for the final.

Baker, Yuhas and Abbott each scored two runs in the game with Baker having two hits.

Andrew Neisinger was credited with the win not allowing a run and giving up just two hits in the final five innings.

In the opening game of the series Western Oregon held the Saints to just four hits behind the pitching on Mike Eisenhauer walked just one and struck out five.

Saint Martin’s got their only runs in the seventh inning on a leadoff homer by Yuhas, a sacrifice from Schoeneberg and a fielding error by the Wolves.

Western Oregon, who scored in five of their eight innings at the plate, was led by Taylor Mieras with two hits and four runs batted in.

Paul Martin and Ikaika Lester had two hits and three RBI each for Lewis-Clark in its win over SMU.

Brandon Kuykendall figured in all of Saint Martin's scoring. He homered in the fourth, singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the seventh and tripled for two runs and then scored on an error in a three-run eighth.

LCSC hit four home runs in the game as Martin, Lester, Chris Lum and Bernard Pena all went deep.

The Saints are now 4-4 on the season and get ready to play their first home games of the year this Friday as they take on Central Washington in a conference doubleheader starting at noon.
