Baseball: Siler breaks GNAC record as Saints spilt with Wolves

May 5, 2007

Lacey, WA – Adam Siler hit his 12th double of the season in the eighth inning of game one against Western Oregon University to break the Great Northwest Athletic Conference career record with 52. The Saints would fall 10-7 in the game but went on to win game two 6-1 behind the solid pitching of Tip Wonhoff.

Western Oregon jumped ahead early in game one with four runs in the first on four hits and one Saint error. They would add three more in the third; one on a sacrifice fly by Paul Fisher followed by a two run double by Boo Christenson. The Wolves capped off their scoring in the fifth. Christenson picked up an RBI single, Fisher was able to score on a wild pitch, and Tony Jones singled through the left side to put Western Oregon up 10-0.

Saint Martin’s started to rally in the seventh and eighth innings. With the bases loaded and no outs Richard O’Neill doubled to score Nate Baker and Siler. Mickey Letofsky then picked up an RBI with a single to right.

With two out sin the eighth Baker singled, advanced to third on the double by Siler and came in to score on an error by the left fielder. Craig Yuhas doubled down the left field line to score Siler. O’Neill launched one over the left field fence to pull the Saints within three. But that’s where the score would stay as SMU couldn’t put anything together in the ninth.

O’Neill was 2-4 in the game with four RBI. Baker went 3-4 with three runs scored while Yuhas was 2-4 with one run batted in and scored twice.

Wonhoff threw a gem in the final outing of his collegiate career allowing just one run on six hits while striking out three and walking just one. Wonhoff walked just four batters in 81 innings this season, the fewest in the GNAC.

The Saints scored first putting up a four spot in the bottom of the second. With no outs and the bases loaded Curtis Thibault was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run. Letofsky came around to score on a passed ball; Siler then singled to right center to bring in two more.

Thibault led off the fourth with a double down the left field line; Baker then walked and stole second. With first base open the WOU intentionally walked Siler to load the bases. The Saints would make them pay as O’Neill hit a two run double to right field to put the Saints up 6-0.

Western Oregon got their only run of the game in the fifth when Aaron Sutton led off with a triple and scored on sacrifice fly by Fisher.

The Saints will play their final two games of the year tomorrow starting at noon. They will honor all of their seniors in a special ceremony between games.
