Baseball: Saints split twinbill with Wildcats

Ellensburg, WA – Saint Martin’s came away with a
split against Central Washington University on Saturday at Tomlinson
Field falling in game one 7-0 and taking game two 9-2.
Wildcat pitching combined for just six hits in game
one. Shane Schoeneberg and Vince Maughan each accounted for two of the
Saints’ hits.
Central picked up one run in the first and two more
in the third. They tacked on another four runs in the fourth on five
consecutive hits. Jamie Nilsen led the charge going 3-4 with three runs
scored.
Pat Capone, who threw all eight innings for the
Saints, was tagged with the loss.
Adam Siler and Schoeneberg started things off for
the Saints in game two with back-to-back homers in the first to put the
Saints up 2-0. Tip Wonhoff surrendered one run in the bottom half of the
inning but shut down the Wildcat offense the rest of the way allowing
just one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Wonhoff gave up just
seven hits and walked only one.
The Saints picked up three more runs in the third on
a doubles by Richard O’Neill and a Craig Yuhas. In the fourth Nate Baker
hit a RBI triple and scored on a single by Siler to put SMU up 7-1. They
would push their lead to seven, adding two more runs in the seventh
inning.
Schoeneberg was 3-4 with a single, double, homerun
and two RBI. Siler, Baker and O’Neill all picked up two hits in the game
with Siler and O’Neill each driving in two runs.
Saint Martin’s will play Central Washington in a
doubleheader today at Saints Field starting at 1pm.
