Baseball: Western Oregon takes four from Saints

Monmouth, OR – Western Oregon got two strong pitching performances against Saint Martin’s on Saturday to take both games 4-1 and 3-1. They then rallied for a 10-inning win in Sunday’s opener and captured a 7-1 victory in game two.

Kevin Corrigan allowed just three singles in Saturday’s opener narrowly beating out Pat Capone who threw a four hitter and allowed just two earned runs for the Saints.

Western Oregon picked up one run in both the third and fourth innings. They added two more in the bottom of the eighth.

The Saints lone run came in the fifth when Shane Schoeneberg led off with a single, advanced to third on a single by Richard O’Neill, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Curtis Thibault.

Saint Martin’s went ahead 1-0 in the first on back-to-back doubles by Nate Baker and Adam Siler. The Wolves took the lead in the third on a two-run triple by Corrigan and added an insurance run in the fourth.

Mike Eisenhauer gave up just one hit after the first inning and didn’t walk a batter. Tip Wonhoff took the loss for SMU.

The Wolves had 10 hits in the game including three by Randy Summers and two each by Coubi Jiles and Tony Jones.

Sunday’s first game saw SMU’s Nick Bolthouse and WOU’s Dan Straily battle in a pitcher’s duel. Bolthouse threw seven scoreless innings allowing only four hits and striking out four. Straily also threw seven scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and fanning five before turning the ball over to Ben Shivers to start the eighth.

The Saints snapped the tie in the eighth as Shivers walked two and then gave up a two-run double to Schoeneberg.

Andrew Neisinger made it through the eighth for the Saints but hit the first two batters he faced in the ninth. Adam Siler then entered the game but gave up a bunt base hit followed by a single down the left field line by Paul Fisher to score two and tie the game.

In the 10th Maki Smith led off with a single and came around to score on a two-out single by Andrew Salinas, giving the Saints the 3-2 advantage.

Western Oregon led off the bottom of the inning with a double. Three batters later Jones tripled to tie the game and scored the winning run on a single by Aaron Sutton.

The Saints had only two extra base hits in the game including Schoeneberg’s double and a double by Andy Cole. Schoeneberg was the only Saint with more then one hit. Corrigan went 4-5 for the Wolves with two doubles, while Sutton was 3-5.

Western Oregon got on the board early in the final game of the series. The Wolves scored two runs in the second then in the third on an error and hit batter set things up for a suicide squeeze by Brent Mertens to score another run.

Saint Martin’s loaded the bases with no one out in the fourth but the Saints couldn’t capitalize as Western Oregon got out of the inning unscathed.

WOU added insurance runs in the fourth picking up three runs on three hits including a solo home run by Fisher.

The Saints picked up their only run in the top of the sixth as Smith led off the inning with a single to center and came around to score on an RBI single to right by Siler.

Andre Speer was tagged with the loss while reliever Mike Ward picked up the win for the Wolves.

The Saints will host Northwest Nazarene in a four game series starting with a doubleheader Friday at 1pm at Saints Field.
